CENTER FOR ADVANCED LEARNING

AirCenter Plaza
Reno, NV 89502

Dear Kimberly and Nick,

Here is the end-of-summer—beginning of school---first 5th grade report card cheers ---holiday card communication that I’ve been meaning to write since last fall but haven’t yet accomplished!

First of all, thank you for all of your excellent work with *John. His 5th grade year started off well and the results of his work with you are still evident and transferring over into his schoolwork. His grades this year are A’s and B’s with an occasional C rather than pre-Cal grades of C’s and D’s and an occasional B. His confidence for learning has also improved.

Secondly, I apologize for his summer absenteeism and lack of exit interview following the summer group session. John really hates the group setting and I got tired of fighting it.

Finally, John brought up CAL spontaneously recently, stating that he might be interested in more individual work this summer. If that interest continues, I will be contacting you in May to arrange something in preparation for 6th grade beginning next fall.

Thanks again. And hearty encouragement for continuing the excellent work you all are doing for children. Best wishes to you and your growing family!

Sincerely,

*Joan

To the staff at CAL:
RE: *Thomas

Dear Kimberly,

I wanted everyone to know what a difference the tutoring in writing accomplished for Thomas during his instruction there from January through May of 2005. *Matthew also has benefited. Both boys earned excellent marks. Thomas enrolled at Sage Ridge School this fall in their 5th grade, self-contained class. We have just finished the first grading period.

The tutoring and strategies Thomas received from you, and especially his tutor, helped him over a major hump and have contributed greatly to his success. We are so grateful for the intervention your program provided and the kind attention he received there. He is confident, motivated and creative in his expressions in the language arts. We believe you played a major role in unlocking some of his gifts. Here are some excerpts from his teacher’s comments this first quarter:

“In English, Thomas’ strength lies in writing. All of his writing pieces were proofread, organized, and he had excellent work choice…He has demonstrated good knowledge of parts of speech and editing marks and can use them easily. Thomas is also able to review for vocabulary and paragraph editing assessments effectively. …In language arts projects, Thomas demonstrated an ability to follow difficult directions independently and produce creative and imaginative presentations.”

“In history, Thomas’ responses demonstrated his excellent ability to synthesize historical information and use his text and notes to support his ideas. All reading responses were strong and many pushed beyond topics to include more complex ideas.”

We never thought anyone would say Thomas’ strength was in writing! I cannot express how thrilled and grateful we are as parents to see this kind of progress. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping to make a huge difference in Thomas’ life, and also in our family life.

Matthew, also, is doing exemplary work. We believe your interventions lifted him out of mediocrity and taught him to make his best efforts. He also uses many of your proofreading and note-taking skills effectively. We may see you again, as needed. In the meantime, know that we mention you to our friends and acquaintances. We hope your business plan is successful, as our community really needs you all. Feel free to use any of these comments as testimonial to your exemplary and effective program of intervention.

Gratefully,

*Jennifer
