YES! Recent advances in learning science have led to the development of highly effective instructional strategies for students with various learning disabilities and challenges. These methods have been proven through clinical testing and research to actually transform the way students learn and perform in the classroom.
Our Director, Dr. Kimberly Berens, is a leader in the field. She actively develops our instructional programs in relation to her own research and clinical work. As a result, our strategies and outcomes have been published and presented at international conferences on learning science and evidence-based instruction.
Our methods focus on building academic fluency, also known as processing speed. Published findings indicate that learners who achieve fluency in basic reading, math, and handwriting areas have:
Increased Attention Span
Stronger Memory Skills
Better Future Learning Abilities
Improved Self-Confidence
Published findings also indicate that most learners with disabilities and challenges tend to have significant deficits in visual and/or auditory processing areas. Our methods correct this primary weakness, and as result, fundamentally transform students as learners.
All students can be better learners!
CAL methods consistently produce 1 year's growth in the target academic area following only 40 hours of instruction. These outcomes have been obtained with a variety of learners including:
Learning Disabled/Special Education
Struggling Learners
ADHD/ADD
Dyslexia/Processing Disorder
Autism Spectrum/Asperger's Disorder
Although our basic goal is the same across all students, our methods are highly individualized. Each student receives an individualized instructional plan based upon the results of a comprehensive skills assessment. Upon enrollment, progress is monitored for each student on individual learning charts specifically designed to track improvements in processing speed. As a result, immediate instructional changes can be made for each student such that optimal progress is achieved.
Learning to learn...
Our Corrective Learning Programs are offered for students in grades K - 12 who may be struggling or who are performing below grade level in the target subject area. These programs are offered as a ratio of 1 student to 1 instructor.
We Target:
Basic Visual and Auditory Processing
Fine Motor and Handwriting Fluency
We also offer small group math instruction, expressive writing classes, and a study skills series for qualifying learners.
A Team Approach
Upon enrollment, each student's individual instructional program is designed by Dr. Berens. Dr. Berens also assigns a (1) Case Adviser (2) Case Manager, and (3) Instructor(s) to each student. This team of learning specialists has been individually trained and certified by Dr. Berens. They are responsible for implementing instructional procedures and curricula according to her specifications.
